UNIT 8: Our World Heritage Sites
LISTENING: PHONG NHA – KE BANG NATIONAL PARK
I. Objectives
1. Knowledge, skills, attitude
- Knowledge
+ To provide Ss with useful language items related to the topic “Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park”.
+ To help Ss know more information about Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.
- Skills: Integrated skills (mainly focus on listening)
- Attitude:
+ To encourage Ss to take part in some competitions to improve their knowledge in these areas.
+ To form Ss the mind of preserving the natural environment.
2. Orientation towards students’ competency development
- To help Ss know more words and knowledge related to scenic landscapes.
- To encourage Ss the awareness of preserving heritage sites.
- To help Ss apply what they learn in the real life.
II. Preparation of teacher and students:
1.On the teacher’s part: materials for teaching, lesson plan, appliances for studying (textbook, references, teaching aids, …)
2.On the students’ part: look up new words, lesson preparation.
III. Teaching procedures.
1.Stabilization (2ms)
-Greets class.
-Asks Ss about the health, the absence, …
2.Classroom activities(38m):

A. START/ WARM UP ACTIVITY (5 ms)
Aims of the activity: To get students to involve in the lesson. To help Ss form and brainstorm their background knowledge about the topic.

- Informs Ss to watch a video about Phong Nha – Ke Bang in 2ms.
- Asks Ss what place is mentioned in the video.
+ “Have you ever visited Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park?”
+ “What do you know about Phong Nha - Ke Bang?”
+ “Where is it?”
+ “What is it famous for?”
+ “Is it a World Heritage Site?”
+ “Why was it recognized as a World Heritage Site?” – Lets Ss answer by themselves.
- Leads to the topic of the lesson. “Today, we will listen to a radio to find out why Phong Nha – Ke Bang was recognized as a World Heritage Site.” - Watch the video
- Enthusiastically answer the questions

- Lets Ss practice orally the vocabulary. (Repeat by the whole class, practice individually) * Vocabulary:
- Limestone (n): Stone that is used as building material or in making cement (Đá vôi)
- Cave(n): A large hole in the side of a hill, mountain or underground. (động)
- Grotto (n): A small cave which is made by human. (hang)
- Flora (n): All the plants of a place. (hệ thực vật)
- Fauna (n): All the animals that live wild in an area. (hệ động vật)
C.PRACTICE ACTIVITIES (18m)
ACTIVITY 2: Match the words with the correct pictures (3ms)
Aims of the activity: To get used to new words.
Content, techniques for organizing students’ learning activities Expected outcome and assessment of students’ performance
- Instructs Ss to do task 2
+ Has Ss look at the pictures
+ “How many pictures are there?”
+ Asks Ss to work in pair and match the words with the pictures in 1ms
- Has Ss give their answers
- Checks the answers by the whole class.







- Gives Ss a sentence with a gap: “When visiting Phong Nha – Ke Bang Tourists can find a lot of………………” – Asks Ss to fill the gap => Leads to task 4 (Listen and complete the sentences)

Aims of the activity:
To practice listening for specific information.

- “Similarly, now we will listen to a radio and fill the blanks”
- Instructs Ss to do task 4:
 + Read through all sentences.
 + Base on the meaning of given sentences, define missing information. Does one as an example.
 + Listen to the radio, focusing on the sound you hear.
 + Decide the possible words, writing them down.
- Defines the missing information by the whole class.
- Lets Ss listen individually to the recording twice and complete sentences.
- Goes around to observe and help if necessary.
- Lets Ss compare the answers with their partner.
- Asks for the answers from the Ss
- Has Ss listen again for checking. - Listen carefully to the teacher’s instruction.
- Listen to the radio.
- Be responsible for group-working.

Aims of the activity:
To help Ss practise listening for specific information and understand why PN-KB National Park was recognized as a World Heritage Site.

- Recalls the question mentioned in the warm-up step “Why was Phong Nha – Ke Bang recognised as a World Heritage Site?”
- Asks Ss to study the three options:
+ Master the meaning of the whole sentences.
+ Define and underline the keywords in each choice.
- Lets Ss listen to the radio once
- Asks Ss to give their answer.










- Asks for the evidence. “What did you hear in the radio?”
- Lets Ss listen again for checking. - Listen carefully to the teacher.
- Listen carefully to the recording.

The answer: C. It is a significant geological site.
Evidence:
- Thanks to its complex geological structure with different kinds of stone
- Phong Nha – Ke Bang mountains can provide a lot of valuable information about the Earth’s geological development through various periods.

D.APPLICATION AND EXTENSION ACTIVITIES: (12ms)
ACTIVITY 1: Work in groups, make plan about your next week vacation to a World Heritage Site in Viet Nam.   (12m)
Aims of the activity:
To provide Ss opportunities for freer communicative practice.
Content, techniques for organizing students’ learning activities Expected outcome and assessment of students’ performance
- Divides the class into 4 team.
- Gives Ss the handout for making plan.
- Instructs Ss to do the task:
+ Ss decide on where they would like to visit.
+ Takes one (Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park) as an example.
+ Gives sample handout helping Ss make their own plans.
   • “Where would you visit? PN-KB National Park for example.”
   • “About the time, when you will start and arrive, and how long the visiting takes place.”
   • “What will you do there? Take pictures, collect speciality, buy souvenirs, join outdoor activities, team-building,…
- Goes around to help if necessary.
- Asks Ss to introduce the class to their group’s plan.
- Lets Ss give their interactive questions about other groups’ plan. *Expected answer:
